Store Bought Floral Upstyle - With Yard Finds!

Store Bought Bouquet UpStyle

Don't let your grocery store bought flowers look droopy and sparse in a vase.  Add office tape to your vase, and yard stuff to plump up your display.

After UpStyle
Create a beautiful floral display with grocery flowers and yard greenery.

#1
Start with adding office tape to your vase.

#2
Walk your yard for greenery -
hosta, ornamental grasses, tree or bush snips all work.
Add those stems to create a base.
.
#3
Make sure to cut the stems of your
store bought floral first. I measure the cut
to the size of the vase and preferred height above rim.
Add floral and final yard found fill.

10 Home Styling Sins - Selling or Dwelling

Home Stylists have some pet peeves when it comes to our craft - selling or dwelling. Here's 10.

1.) Faux Greenery in Odd Areas. Always place trees or greenery in areas that they could actually GROW! Their sole faux purpose is to give the illusion they are real, therefore need photosynthesis (light) to grow.  Home Styling tip: Pop your faux tree in size appropriate woven basket, topped with Spanish moss to complete the look.

2.) Too High Art. When hanging art over a sofa or a case good, associate the height to the item to retain good visual contact. The display will not look right if it seems to float too high above the object - it needs to be grounded. 18" from the back of the sofa is a good rule of thumb. And slightly above the smallest arrangement for the case good.

3.) The Rug Scale to Conversation Area Faux Pas. A rug can create and define a conversational grouping. Make sure that the scale of the rug is in-tune to the scale of the furniture/objects associated to it. A sofa should either be sitting on or no more than 8"away from a rug.  Just about the same size as the cocktail table is NOT a scale formula for rug size.

4.) Accessorizing with Evens. When accessorizing or creating vignettes, the golden rule is "Always in Odd Numbers."

5.) Forgetting the Focal Point. Every space has a fabulous purpose or emphasis. Focusing on the purpose and/or emphasis of the room will allow you to set the mood and arrange the furnishings and accessories properly.

6.) Flood Window Treatments. Traditionally drapery panels are set 1/2 in. off the floor. 1" is pushing it and 3" off the floor is creating a Capri style curtain...

7.) Being Light Challenged. Every room should have at least three light sources for the function of space. Can ceiling lights do not count. The perfect formula is to have them placed in a triangle pattern around the room; which will create movement and flow to the space.

8.) Table Short. Anywhere someone sits should have a table in reach of a seated person. The exception is a transitional space such as a foyer or hall.

9) A Mirrored Mess. Mirrors over fireplaces, sofas, or lonely on a wall oh my... Mirrors should always reflect something beautiful - Not a ceiling fan, 2nd floor rail or blank wall. You can be excused if it is a decorative mirror that shows as art rather than function.

10.) Oddly Angled Furniture. Don't think your being creative if you put it on an angle. Angles instantly slice through visionary planes, can make people psychologically feel uncomfortable, can eat up floor space and can render the piece or room function-less. Home Styling Tip: Follow the room's walls, focal point and traffic pattern for clues on how to arrange furniture.

Falling Back in Love With Your Home - Fresh Ideas for February

Re-Arrange Your Furniture.
This gives your rooms a new, fresh perspective and offers a chance to love the stuff you already have.  Keeping furniture in the same spot makes your home stale and boring. Try re-positioning your seating first, followed by tables, then lighting. With the new arrangement, your accessories will get a needed shake up too.  Don’t be afraid to flip flop pieces from other rooms.

Celebrate your Heirlooms.  We all have them. Inherited, passed down, or gifted from our wedding. Don't let them languish in a dark closet - get them out and celebrate their heritage. Use your wedding vase with a big bouquet of tulips you picked up from the market. Re-purpose a passed down dresser or desk with a trendy paint color and some sassy new knobs. Pick up some fun wallpaper and line the drawers. Plant a succulent garden in Grandma's tea cups and put it on your window sill.

Buy Something Fancy. Invest a cashmere throw to keep you cozy till spring. Splurge on crisp, high thread count sheets for your bed. Buy your very favorite expensive candle. Even better, buy all three!

Paint a room. Paint is easy. Paint is fast. Paint can change a room's environment in a day. 2020 has some great paint color inspiration that can reinvent a space. Be daring and paint away.

Buy a Plant. Whether blooming, 7 feet tall, or hanging from a retro macrame holder - plants make any space come alive, clean the air and make you think of warmer days.
